The Silver Route is a path that links the current cities of Seville (Andalusia) and Gijón (Asturias), all through the regions of Extremadura and Leon.
This was an important trade route since 700 BC, and it was strategically important for the Roman military, cultural and commercial expansion in the Iberian Peninsula. During the Middle Age, both Muslims and Christians served themselves to this route on their efforts to conquer Spain. Contrary to its name, the Silver Route was never an important silver trading path. There are two different theories to explain its name. One states that, the name “Plata” comes from a phonetic confusion of the Arabic term “Al balat”, meaning the path. Another one says that it comes from “Via Delapidata” that was “paved stone way” for the Romans.
Travel the Silver Route is a magnificent experience, a spiritual trip to ancient times through the wonderful landscapes of Western Spain. Nowadays, it is used by many pilgrims as an alternative way to Santiago de Compostela (Saint James) and many of the towns that crosses are World Heritage Sites such as Mérida (with its well-preserved Roman remains), Cáceres (famous for its Medieval and Renaissance architecture) and Salamanca (home of the first European university recognized by the Church).
The Silver Route is ideal to be traveled by bike, going forward a bit every day, eating in little towns and staying at some of the hostels settled along the way.
