Declared a major Cultural Itinerary by the European Council, the Route of the Caliphate is a tourist route that form part of the Al – Andalus legacy. The route links the two most important cities of the Muslim era and medieval Spain; Cordoba, the Omeya Caliphate’s capital which historical neighborhood is a World Heritage Site, and Grenada, capital of the Nazari dynasty where the Alhambra and other splendorous palaces still stand.

Thousands of visitors travel the Route of the Caliphate between those two magical cities, through a path of castles and walled villages, which date from the Al Andalus period. These were protagonists of the fights between Muslims and Christians when this region was the frontier of both civilizations from the XI century onwards.

The Route of the Caliphate used to be one of the most transited of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Age. Its villages and fortress located on hills slopes make it not only a history lesson but also a pleasure for the senses. Wonderful landscapes, delicious cuisine and cultural richness are waiting to be discovered along this majestic path.
