With a pretty high average altitude and with a snow season that goes up to five months in certain regions, Spain is an excellent destination for ski and snowboard lovers.
Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe, thus it offers around 1000 km of quality marked trails and slopes. The top destinations for skiing in Spain are the Pyrenees at the North, the Sierra Nevada in the South and the Cantabrian Mountains, but there are plenty of choices and dozens of ski resorts distributed along five different regions, including some excellent ones a few kilometers away from Madrid.
Skiing in the Pyrenees:
Baqueira Beret Resort – Located in the Pyrenees, in the province of Lleida, the resort provides more than 117 skiable kilometers. There are good options either for advanced skiers or lessons for beginners. The resort also offers excellent facilities and accommodation for more than 4000 guests.
Other excellent resorts in the region are Cadanchu, Formigal, Valter 2000, Vall de Nuria among many others.
Skiing in Sierra Nevada:
Pradollano Resort - At just 100 km away from the andalusian coast, this is the perfect place if you are looking for both ski and beach activities. With 2100m as maximum tall, Pradollano combines activities for adults (such as night skiing) and games in the snow for kids. Its ski schools offer good lessons for all levels and ages.
Skiing in Northern Spain:
Even though North Western Spain does not have a constant presence of snow during the season, there are certain places where snow can be found in good quantities. There is a group of good resorts on the area which take the maximum advantage of the snowy Winter.
Manzaneda in Galicia, San Isidro in León and Altocampoo in Cantabria, are excellent resorts that offer different services such as ski school on warm and comfortable facilities.
Skiing near Madrid:
If when visiting Madrid you are wondering to ski, don’t worry, there are several options at hand. Navacerrada, in Madrid´s borderline with Segovia, offers excellent tracks from 100m to 1300m with different levels of difficulty. Valdeski has instructive lessons, workshops and group activities just 80 km far from Madrid. Also in Segovia, La Pinilla offers several tracks with heights that go from 1500m to 2270m.
