Madrid’s location in the heart of Spain, make it an easy to reach city. Either by train, car or bus you can easily get to Madrid from any other place in the country, since railways and roads were built taking Madrid as a centre. Furthermore, Barajas Airport in Madrid -the most important in Spain- receives flights from the five continents, being the main entrance door to the country. Download Madrid Transport Maps.

Once in Madrid, there are several options to move within the city. The transportation system is comprehensive and agile. The Intercambiadores de Transporte (such as the Atocha station in central Madrid) combine all the urban transport means, so you can go down the rail and take an urban bus and so on. Since 2007 the Tramway system is being developed and is working with great success in certain areas, but there are still very few lines.

The Metro (underground) network is vast and efficient, with several lines that circulate in good frequencies, including a circle line that combines in different points with almost all the remaining lines of the system. Even though they are not as fast as the metro, the urban buses cover a wider area of the city and they have more night frequencies. As per the fares both metro and bus have similar fares for a single ticket and in both cases you can buy a monthly card.

To travel to sub urban areas, the best options are the interurbanos (buses that go outside Madrid) and the Renfe Cercanías Rail. In both cases, there are cards that allow a combination of different transport means, for instance Metro and Rail.

Taxis in Madrid are safe, since the local regulations are pretty clear. They are easily identified by its white color with a diagonal red line on each side. The fares are not expensive when comparing with the rest of Europe. They are calculated with a base fare (that costs around the price of two single bus tickets) and then the additional costs are marked considering the time and distance the trip took.
