Madrid is undoubtedly one of the top cultural destinations of the Western world. Its historical and artistic heritage is incomputable either in plastic arts, architecture, monuments, music, performing arts and letters; Madrid has seen several artists’ first steps and successful carriers.
Plastic arts have a special place among Madrid’s cultural agenda with top museums such as the Prado Museum (one of the most important museums in the world, where painters such as Goya and Velázquez are exhibited), the Reina Sofía Art Museum (a fantastic venue of 20th century art that have Picasso and Dali’s works on its collections) and the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum (a formerly private collection that completes the missing elements of the Prado and the Reina Sofía). Other important museums and art galleries in this discipline are the San Fernando Museum and the Caixa Forum Madrid.
But cultural richness in Madrid exceeds plastic arts. There are several museums in other disciplines that attract plenty of visitors every day such as the National Archeological Museum of Spain, the Museum of the Americas and the Natural Science Museum.
In case you do not have time to visit a museum there are plenty of opportunities to see art in the streets of Madrid. Each corner has a monument or a building that well worth a picture. Alcala's door, Cibeles Fountain, the wonderful Almudena Cathedral and the Zarzuela Palace (official Royal Residence) are icons of Madrid in the world. Other important monuments are the Puerta del Sol and Puerta de Toledo (ancient entrance to the city similar to Alcala's but smaller) the Plaza Mayor (where the popular New Year celebration takes place), Neptune’s fountain, the Christopher Columbus Monument and the Bank of Spain building.
Madrid also has an important offer of spectacles such as theatres, exhibitions and musical events. Its importance as a cultural hub attracts artists of the whole world to its stages, so it is always advisable to check what is going to be on during your stay.
