Bullfighting is one of the most traditional and popular spectacles in Spain. It has evolved along the centuries being influenced by the different civilization that inhabited the Iberian Peninsula and today it forms part of Spain’s cultural identity attracting thousands of people to the arenas.
The spectacle consists of bullfighters (the matador, picadores and banderilleros) provoking and facing a huge pure blood bull (which have been especially bred for the “lidia”), demonstrating its skills and abilities, weakening and finally killing the bull with special instruments. Bullfighting is as popular as controversial since some people find it very traditional while others consider it just a ceremonious way of torturing an animal.
In almost every Spanish important city, bullrings occupy a central location. Whether you decide to attend a bullfight or not, bullrings are interesting buildings that deserve a guided visit when there is no show. Some of the most important arenas are Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid, (being the biggest bullring in the world with a capacity for 25000 spectators), Maestranza in Seville (is the country’s oldest big bullring and one of the most beautiful), and Ronda (considered the cradle of modern bullfighting).
